Getting Your Pointe Shoes
Nutcracker-Ready

Prepare, protect, and perform your best this season.

Nutcracker season is magical — but it's also one of the busiest and most demanding times for ballet dancers. From long rehearsals to multiple performances, your pointe shoes become your most essential tool.

Proper preparation and care will help you dance with ease, avoid blisters, and shine on stage. Here's a student-friendly guide to getting your pointe shoes Nutcracker-ready.

01

Start Early

Don't wait until the week before your first Nutcracker rehearsal to break in new pointe shoes. Breaking in and customizing your shoes takes time — and every dancer has their own process.

Give yourself a few days — or even weeks — to get your shoes stage-ready, allowing them to mold to your feet and feel comfortable when it matters most. Your shoes need rehearsal too.

02

Gentle Breaking-In Tips

When it comes to breaking in your pointe shoes, less is more. The best way to reach that "sweet spot" is to simply dance in them — your feet will naturally shape the shoe exactly where it needs to give you support.

The goal is pliability without losing support.

Shank should be supportive but flexible enough to roll through with ease.
Box should be firm and even.
Pro Tip Keep a rotation of shoes at different stages of wear. Once a pair reaches its "sweet spot," set it aside for an important rehearsal or performance. A newer pair for roles needing extra support, a softer pair for quick footwork like the Snowflakes. This system extends the life of all your shoes and gives you options under pressure.
03

Secure Your Ribbons and Elastics

Even students can sew their own ribbons and elastics with a basic whip stitch. Here's how to do it right:

Use strong waxed thread to attach ribbons and elastic.
Burn the ends of your ribbon or use Fray Check to prevent unraveling.
Check tightness while standing in demi-pointe so your ribbons don't slip during performance.
If possible, ask your teacher for guidance on proper placement or have your shoes professionally sewn.
Before Every Performance Get in the habit of checking your sewing before every show. Even the smallest tear or weak stitch can cause the worst kind of wardrobe malfunction. This simple habit ensures your shoes will be performance-ready every time.
04

Comfort Matters

Nutcracker rehearsals can be long. Comfortable shoes mean you can focus on dancing rather than foot pain.

Use toe pads, lambs wool, and tape to prevent blisters.
Rotate between two pairs of shoes if possible.
Keep feet clean and dry to avoid friction.
Keep nails healthy and trimmed. Consider skipping nail color during Nutcracker season — it lets you spot any bruising or issues right away.
05

Practice Makes Perfect

Once your shoes are prepped, continue to practice in them regularly. Each rehearsal helps your shoes mold to your feet even more and builds your confidence on stage.

Whether you're the Sugar Plum Fairy or a Snowflake, properly fitted pointe shoes provide the support and security you need to perform with artistry and confidence. If there's any doubt, consider visiting your local fitter before the curtain rises.
